Tips & Best Practices for a Mentee:

As a mentee, you should:

  • Recognize your value and limits of the relationship
    • Be open to information offered to you, create vivid expectations and establish healthy boundaries.
  • Prepare for your role in the mentoring relationship
    • Your mentor will be giving his or her time to share experiences and perspectives to assist you with your business/career/goals.  Actively seek feedback from your mentor, and be as specific as possible when asking for information, ideas and suggestions.  Be open for feedback throughout the relationship and be open to provide feedback as well.
  • Identify your Interests and Needs
    • Clarify the goals and expectations you have for your mentoring relationship. Identify what you will need.  Provide a plan for F.O.C.U.S. Following on course understanding standards. “Keep your mind on the plan with the plan in mind.” TAKE ACTION!  When you are given projects/homework, don’t wait.  Get it done and follow up.  This illustrates that you are serious about yourself and honor your Mentor’s time.
  • Set goals for each meeting
    • Never be unprepared.  As a mentee, you are to set your own expectations and set goals for your own development.  Goals should be established before each meeting to ensure efficiency for both you and your mentor.  Write down all of your goals and make plans on how to reach them.
  • Be intentional
    • As you grow your relationship with your mentor, be intentional with your time and ability.  As a mentee, you are also responsible to bring your ideas, thoughts, and opportunities to the relationship.  Mentorship is a two way relationship.  Being intentional can help your relationship evolve and grow.
